A Spitzer Spectrum of the Exoplanet Hd 189733b

چکیده
We report on the measurement of the 7.5-14.7 micron spectrum for the tran-siting extrasolar giant planet HD 189733b using the Infrared Spectrograph on the Spitzer Space Telescope. Though the observations comprise only 12 hours of telescope time, the continuum is well measured and has a flux ranging from 0.6 mJy to 1.8 mJy over the wavelength range, or 0.49 ± 0.02% of the flux of the parent star. The variation in the measured fractional flux is very nearly flat over the entire wavelength range and shows no indication of significant absorption by water or methane, in contrast with the predictions of most atmospheric models. Models with strong day/night differences appear to be disfavored by the data, suggesting that heat redistribution to the night side of the planet is highly efficient.

THE BROADBAND INFRARED EMISSION SPECTRUM OF THE EXOPLANET HD 189733b
We present Spitzer Space Telescope time series photometry of the exoplanet system HD 189733 spanning two times of secondary eclipse, when the planet passes out of view behind the parent star. We estimate the relative eclipse depth in 5 distinct bands and find the planet-to-star flux ratio to be 0.256±0.014% (3.6 μm), 0.214±0.020% (4.5 μm), 0.310 ± 0.034% (5.8 μm), 0.391 ± 0.022% (8.0 μm), and 0...
متن کاملThe prevalence of dust on the exoplanet HD 189733b from Hubble and Spitzer observations
The hot Jupiter HD 189733b is the most extensively observed exoplanet. Its atmosphere has been detected and characterized in transmission and eclipse spectroscopy, and its phase curve measured at several wavelengths. This paper brings together the results of our campaign to obtain the complete transmission spectrum of the atmosphere of this planet from UV to infrared with the Hubble Space Teles...
متن کاملAnalysis of Exoplanetary Transit Light Curves
This Thesis considers the scenario in which an extra-solar planet (exoplanet) passes in front of its star relative to our observing perspective. In this event, the light curve measured for the host star features a systematic drop in flux occurring once every orbital period as the exoplanet covers a portion of the stellar disk. This exoplanetary transit light curve provides a wealth of informati...
متن کاملA Temperature and Abundance Retrieval Method for Exoplanet Atmospheres
We present a new method to retrieve molecular abundances and temperature profiles from exoplanet atmosphere photometry and spectroscopy. We run millions of one-dimensional (1D) atmosphere models in order to cover the large range of allowed parameter space. In order to run such a large number of models, we have developed a parametric pressure–temperature (P–T) profile coupled with line-by-line r...
متن کاملAnalysis of Spitzer Spectra of Irradiated Planets: Evidence for Water Vapor?
Published mid infrared spectra of transiting planets HD 209458b and HD 189733b, obtained during secondary eclipse by the InfraRed Spectrograph (IRS) aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope, are predominantly featureless. In particular these flux ratio spectra do not exhibit an expected feature arising from water vapor absorption short-ward of 10μm. Here we suggest that, in the absence of flux variab...
